Top 10 Tuesday: Characters i’d want as family members

i challenged myself this week to find characters or books i don’t talk about ALL THE TIME (but i should because i love them so.)
After looking at my list i realized that all of my characters are kids/teenagers. i think this has something to do with the fact that i have NO extended family. i’m an only child. Both of my parents are only children. That means i have no brothers or sisters, no aunts or uncles and no cousins. i’ve really only ever known one grandparent (and she’s amazing, sometime i should just blog about my grandma because she’s so kick ass) so the concept of family reunions was foreign to me growing up. There were no kids in my neighborhood so i was happy to go to daycare and school because at least there was someone around.
ANYWAY, i think this list is me crying out for siblings and cousins.
In no particular order.
1. Ramona from the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary
2. Any of the four from The View From Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg (seriously if you haven’t read this book, do it right now)
3. Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery
4. Laura from the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder
5. Marjane from the Persepolis books by Marjane Satrapi
6. Cecil from Cecil in Space by Sid Hite
7. Dimple from Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
8. Joe from The Misfits and Totally Joe by James Howe
9. Amelia from the Amelia series by Marissa Moss
10. Molly from the Molly series of American Girl books by Valerie Tripp
and another because i can
11. Pippi from the Pippi Longstocking books by Astrid Lindgren

Ooh, the American Girl books. I haven’t read those since middle school. Samantha and Nellie were always my favorites.
Someone else had Julien Singh from The View from Saturday on their list. That’s another book that I haven’t read in a LONG time, so I should probably pick it up again soon.
i hadn’t read them since around that same time so last summer i decided to re-read all of them, including the new girls that hadn’t existed when i was little. It was so much fun and i still loved them.
i was excited to see someone else chose Julian.
Bah, how could I forget Anne Shirley?? And seeing James Howe reminded me of Bunnicula; I would have totally added Harold in there if I had thought of it. Great list!
Thanks Tahleen! That’s how i always feel on TTT when i go to other people’s lists. But that’s also what i love about it (even though it makes my TBR and my i want to reread that list grow by miles)
I thought about putting Marjane and Anne on my list too. Pippi’s a great choice too! And Ramona…
What’s Totally Joe about? I dig the Chuck Taylors on the cover…
Yay! Another Marjane fan! Totally Joe is a companion book to the Misfits (i actually read Totally Joe first because i didn’t know and i was intrigued by the Chucks on the cover as well) in the Misfits a group of kids who are picked on and decide to do something about it. Totally Joe shows some of what happens after that and focuses on Joe, a gay middle schooler trying to figure out life and the world. They are both really great books and the inspiration for No Name-Calling Week.
